Nominations now open for the 2011 Australian Jazz Bell Awards

The Australian Jazz Bell Awards recognise and encourage excellence in the performance, creativity, recording and presentation of jazz in Australia. The awards are informally known as ‘the Bells’ in honour of one of the greats of Australian Jazz, Mr Graeme Bell MBE AO.

Prize: $5000 for the winner (or collective winners) per category.

The Australian Jazz Awards 2011 will be announced at an awards ceremony on Thursday 28th April 2011.

Deborah Conway’s 1990s hit ‘It’s Only the Beginning’ was Ted Baillieu’s theme song during the election campaign and we at Music Victoria are hoping that that sentiment rings true over the next few weeks when the new Government formulates its arts policy.

Mr Baillieu taking on the arts portfolio as well as running the state augurs well for the arts community, as it will give arts initiatives a higher profile.

Music Victoria encourages musical education and celebrating Melbourne venues, but we would love to also see support for artists at the grassroots level and in training and development.

It would be great to capitalise on some of our best talent, with artists such as Conway (who currently runs the Queensland Music Festival) and Paul Grabowski (who runs the Adelaide Festival of the Arts) and Mick Harvey involved in curating any new festivals.

Dimitron: A Benefit for Dimitra

Melbourne’s music community has joined ranks to raise funds for local muso Dimitra Bucolo, who has been hospitalised due to complications from lupus.

Dimitra has been performing since 1996 in various bands and solo projects (Scratchplate, Aux Assembly, Archaic Forms, Silence is Golden) in Australia and internationally, and is in need of significant financial help with her urgent medical and rehabilitation costs.

 A gigantic benefit gig, dubbed Dimitron: A Benefit for Dimitra, is coming up at The Corner next Wednesday 1st December featuring The Drones, Zond, Hoss, Love of Diagrams, The Stabs, Kes Trio, New War, Matt Bailey and Breathing Shrine, plus Eddy Current & Twerps DJs

Lucas Aid - A Benefit for Steve Lucas

The legendary Steve Lucas from Melbourne band X needs help with expenses for an extensive back operation. 

In true rock & roll style, earlier this year against doctors orders, Steve Lucas ( frontman / guitarist, X /Bigger Than Jesus ), took Australia’s legendary primal act X on an American tour. Doing so in great fashion, playing to sell out halls up and down the west coast. Now he is in need of medical treatment for back injuries accentuated due to the tour.

Australia Council Arts Funding Forums for Bendigo and Mildura

The Australia Council is running a series of funding forums in regional Victoria with information on their arts funding programs and how to increase the chances of having a successful application. 

The forums are free and aimed at all current and aspiring artists and arts organisations interested to learn about what the Australia Council offers. The events are staged in partnership with the state arts agencies, which will provide information about their own funding opportunities.

2011 APRA Professional Development Awards - now open for applications.

The 2011 APRA Professional Development Awards (PDAs) will change the life of eight emerging Australian songwriters and composers. Each winner will receive a prize package valued at over $25,000 – made up of cash, products, travel, education and recognition.

The Professional Development Awards are presented every two years by APRA in conjunction with music organisations and institutions involved in the representation or education of Australian music creators.

Announcement of winners for the Melbourne Prize for Music 2010

The Melbourne Prize Trust has announced the recipients of the Melbourne Prize for Music 2010, the Outstanding Musicians Award 2010 and the Development Award 2010. 

The announcements were made at BMW Edge in Federation Square and included the opening of the free exhibition of finalists in the Atrium – November 8 to 22.
