Minister announces $22.2 million final stage of Music Works package in Melbourne

17 Apr 2018

Music Victoria has been tasked with the delivery and management of the Victorian Music Development Office (VMDO) at the Collingwood Arts Precinct following an announcement from Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries. The Minister announced the final exciting stage in the State Government’s $22.2 million Music Works package at a ceremony held at the Collingwood Arts Precinct today.

This final stage of the Music Works package will comprise:

-          The establishment of the Music Market.

-          The creation of the VMDO, delivered by Music Victoria.

-          Support Acts for the Big Names.

Delivered by Music Victoria and supported by an industry steering committee, the VMDO will run a multitude of programs that support live music across Victoria.

The establishment of the VMDO will ensure the creation of:

-          An industry research program

-          A free event program featuring international speakers

-          An export focused program that includes global marketing campaigns about Victorian acts

-          Music business development activities including small business and enterprise lab

-          A service providing free or low-cost advice to music businesses

The VMDO will also be charged with the implementation of Support Acts for the Big Names, a campaign supporting diversity and inclusion in contemporary music programming. This campaign will focus on increasing live music opportunities for First Peoples, women, and under-represented artists by encouraging promoters to book these acts as support to larger musicians.

Tim Northeast, Chair, Music Victoria says:

“Music Victoria would like to acknowledge and thank the Andrews Government for its significant investment in the music industry via the Music Works Program.

The Melbourne Live Music Census 2017 results released last week show that the local industry is flourishing as a result of this investment and continues to be a major driver of employment in the arts and hospitality sectors.

Music Victoria looks forward to creating further opportunities for the industry through the Victorian Music Development Office and the Collingwood Arts Precinct.”

Martin Foley, Minister for Creative Industries says:

“This is all about taking Victorian music to the next level – by backing our industry’s best and brightest and inspiring the artists of tomorrow.”

“The Music Market will be a hub of creativity, allowing musicians to share ideas and collaborate on projects, get training and do business.”
