Dear FORTE readers,

I hope you had a great and safe festive break, what an incredible summer for music in Ballarat!

We just came back from witnessing the amazing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds show at the stunning North Gardens on Lake Wendouree, which was the most memorable show the band has played since they trekked up Mount Buller to play the ATP (All Tomorrow’s Parties) event in 2009.

Clearly Cave, who was born in Warracknabeal and raised in Wangaratta, thrives in regional settings, and people working on the show said that the Prince of Darkness spent time after the sound check taking in the lush venue and surroundings.  On stage he described being shown around town by Bad Seed violinist and Ballarat-born Warren Ellis, and a visit to a local fish ‘n’ chip shop where a woman behind the counter requested he play Nobody’s Baby Now, which he later performed.

Applications for APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund close in one month

Composers have just over a month to get their applications in for the APRA AMCOS Art Music Fund.

The fund offers grants totalling A$100,000 for the creation of new commissioned work by Australian and New Zealand composers.

Launched in 2016, the Art Music Fund exists to see new works distributed as widely as possible among national and international audiences. Successful applicants in the first round of funding included established and emerging composers, with 45% of funding awarded to women.

"The Contemporary Music Touring Program (CMTP) supports national touring activity undertaken by Australian musicians performing original contemporary music. It provides travel support of up to $15,000 for artists and their manager for tours in Australia that include performances in regional and remote areas."

At Music Victoria, we started the year undertaking the Victorian regional audit on behalf of the Victorian state government, and have expanded our programs and staff to run the Good Music Neighbours sound attenuation program, and the Live Music Professionals program to assist mid-career independent promoters, venue managers, owners and band bookers across the state.

AMIN relaunch the LOVE LIVE MUSIC - 60 Second Film Competition

Building on the outstanding success of last year’s inaugural competition the Australian Music Industry Network (AMIN) is thrilled to announce the return of the LOVE LIVE MUSIC 60-second film comple6on.
The competition, as part of a national initiative to focus on the importance of Australian contemporary live music, calls for filmmakers and musicians to collaborate on a 60 second film that is centred around one of the following themes:

~ Imagine life without live Australian music ~
~ What I love about live Austrlian music ~
~ What live Australian music means to me ~

Presented through the medium of short film the resulting films serve as a reminder of the social, cultural and economic value of contemporary music to the lives of everyday Australians.
