Dear members and subscribers,

Regional Victoria is a harvest of musical treasures.
 
A Victorian State Government initiative, delivered by Music Victoria with additional funding from Visit Victoria and some wonderful hospitality from regional councils, musicians and venues, the inaugural Victorian Music Crawl took 25 musicians, media, managers, booking agents and government on a three day road trip through south-western and northern Victoria.
 
The project aimed to shine a spotlight on the musical offerings of regional Victoria, and build connections to increase tours through regional Victoria, and provide more opportunities for regional artists to perform outside their home towns.

16 Feb 2017 Victorian Music Crawl - Musical Bus Tour Kicks Off Today

The Victorian Music Crawl is a new Victorian Government initiative to build connections between Melbourne and regionally-based music industry leaders.

25 Melbourne-based music managers, venue bookers, promoters, artists and music media will undertake a three day tour to Ballarat, Castlemaine, Bendigo and Echuca.  

Managed by Music Victoria, the Victorian Music Crawl is the first program of its kind in Australia. Three tours will take place across 2017-18 with a tour to the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland planned for the second half of 2017 and a tour to Geelong, the Surf Coast and Warrnambool scheduled for next summer.

We’re excited to announce that we will be heading up your way very soon with APRA AMCOS to present a panel discussion: Geelong – A music city. A number of factors have seen Geelong develop a unique and influential array of musicians across many eras and genres. In this two part panel hosted by editor-in-chief at Forte Magazine Amanda Sherring we first delve into the musical history of Victoria’s second biggest city with Au-Go-Go Records founder and all-round Australian music brain Bruce Milne. Part two will see APRA AMCOS and MUSIC VICTORIA offering a unique opportunity to gain insight from the Geelong’s scene’s current creative curators - offering information and advice on booking shows, writing, promoting and circulating your music independently. Offering their experience and sage advice will be psych-folk Flightless Records artist Leah Senior, Barwon Club booker Al O’Neill and Billy Gardner who runs Anti-Fade Records, plays in a bunch of bands (Ausmuteants, Living Eyes and Cereal Killer) and co-runs Jerkfest. From 5.30pm Tuesday 7 March 2017 @ The Barwon Club. Music Victoria is excited to launch Live Music Professionals – a brand new program targeting independent promoters and venues. The program aims to help individuals in the Victorian music community build sustainable live music businesses. 

Successful applicants will be matched with some of Victoria's most skilled and experienced music industry professionals for one-on-one coaching sessions in key areas tailored to their individual or business needs. Participants will also attend specialised workshops, Face The Music – Victoria’s annual contemporary music industry conference – and have access to invaluable networking opportunities.

We’ve done some stats on the Triple J Hottest 100!

We heard from the ABC that a “record breaking 66 songs in the countdown came from Australian artists. The most ever in countdown history and pipping 2014's tally of 59.”

But out of that a massive 17 artists are Victorian!

New funding to boost regional arts and audiences

Great news for regional arts across Victoria!

Eight performing arts centres, galleries and councils across Victoria will share in more than $500,000 through these new programs which aim to support regional venues to strengthen connections with the local community and attract new, or underrepresented, groups.

Forte Mag - This State We're In #6

Dear FORTE readers,

I hope you had a great and safe festive break, what an incredible summer for music in Ballarat!

We just came back from witnessing the amazing Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds show at the stunning North Gardens on Lake Wendouree, which was the most memorable show the band has played since they trekked up Mount Buller to play the ATP (All Tomorrow’s Parties) event in 2009.

Clearly Cave, who was born in Warracknabeal and raised in Wangaratta, thrives in regional settings, and people working on the show said that the Prince of Darkness spent time after the sound check taking in the lush venue and surroundings.  On stage he described being shown around town by Bad Seed violinist and Ballarat-born Warren Ellis, and a visit to a local fish ‘n’ chip shop where a woman behind the counter requested he play Nobody’s Baby Now, which he later performed.
