CEO Report - September 2017

28 Sep 2017

Dear members and subscribers,

They say accidents happen to musicians in "Nashville Music City’’. The highest concentration of music industry in the world, cheap rent, and a music tourism boom driven by the success of the hugely popular music TV series Nashville have resulted in a perfect storm for the Nashville music industry.

Music Victoria and a number of Victorian musicians travelled to Nashville’s Americanafest  - The America Music Festival and Conference two weeks ago, and happened to be in the right place at the right time one Sunday afternoon.

We were having a farewell catch up and jam at Urban Cowboy, a boutique hotel and restaurant part-owned by Melbourne-bred, New York-based producer Andy Baldwin, when the crew from global cooking show The Zimmern List asked if they could shoot the jam for a special feature on Nashville. The impromptu band, featuring Emilee South and Matt Dixon, Larissa Tandy, Andy Baldwin, Dobe Newton, members of All Our Exes Live in Texas and local musicians Ruby Amanfu, Mitch Jones and Tia Thomason performed two songs which will be featured on the show and will result in a profile boost and royalties.

We also met with Tennessee and Nashville tourism and economic development representatives, who are exporting the Americana brand to Victoria with initiatives including the Australian Americana Music Honours Night which takes place at the Thornbury Theatre next Monday night.

The research element of the trip was also hugely successful - we learnt about the Americana Music Awards, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and how the Americanafest supports the local industry and tourism. We look forward to implementing their best ideas in Victoria and will be using this research to help inform the Music Cities Convention - Melbourne, which will be hosted here in April 2018. Stay tuned for more on that...

See you at a gig soon,
MV crew.
