B4U Play - Musical Melting Pot at Live N Local

21 Aug 2017, 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Date: 21 August 2017
Time:
6:00pm-7:30pm

Venue: Bell's Hotel, 157 Moray Street, South Melbourne, VIC 3205

Panel: 6:00pm-7:30pm

Collaborations can transcend, and can polarise. What makes a good cross-cultural collaboration, and what should you be aware of when you agree to work with others on a shared music outcome.

Most great music is the result of collaboration on some level. Some of the most profound and influential music known to us is the result of a meeting of great music minds of artists from different backgrounds to create something truly unique. Think about Paul Simon’s controversial, but critically acclaimed Graceland, Ry Cooder’s Cuban collaborative masterpiece Buena Vista Social Club (not to mention Ali Farka Toure and Ry’s Talking Timbuktu), and more recently Yothu Yindi & The Treaty Project at Strawberry Fields and Queenscliff Music Festival this November. This fascinating panel discussion will see artists and music journalists dissect and analyse classic collaborations, discuss some of their politics, and shine light on important considerations when collaborating with other artists and cultures. This is one not to miss.

Panelists include: Syrene Favero (The Operatives/Opiuo Band), Systa BB (The Good, The Dub & The Global - RRR), DJ Beatrice, Jan Skubiszewski (Way of the Eagle) and Amadou Sosu (Senegambian Jazz Band), moderated by Mikey Cahill (Herald Sun). Special collaborative performance by Amadou Sosu & DJ Beatrice.
